Letter from the President and Vice President

Dear Members of the StFX Students’ Union,

As many of you have heard over the past two days, conciliated negotiations between StFX and the Association of University Teachers (AUT) broke off late Saturday night. The conciliator, Mr. John Greer, will now file his “no board report”. A fourteen-day period will begin upon the submission of the conciliator’s report, which is expected by the end of this week. During this period neither a strike nor employer-initiated job action can occur.

Following this period, the AUT can take a strike vote or the Administration can lockout the faculty. There is a 48 hours notice that must be given before either takes place.

The AUT has stated that they are committed to reaching a deal at the table. The Administration has publicly committed to not locking-out the faculty.

The Students’ Union will be working this week to prepare some options to address your academic and social needs should a disruption to classes occur. We are still hopeful that the two sides will get back to the table and work out a deal prior to the 14 days expiring.

The Students’ Union remains neutral in this process and will ensure students are provided with up-to-date information. For updates from both parties, we encourage you to visit the following links: StFX Update | AUT Update. If you have any further questions or concerns regarding the current situation please feel free to contact your Students’ Union.

Thank you,

Nick Head-Petersen and Rachel Mitchell
