New Res A & B!

Hey StFX!

Just want to keep you updated on my day-to-day life here in 410, 4th Floor SUB! The House Presidents, Vice Presidents and Off Campus Leaders have all been busy working on your house shirts and their letters to first-year students – and they look AWESOME! After meeting with the House Council Coordinators today over milkshakes and fries from X Burger, it’s safe to say we are all incredibly excited to get the year started! Greenhorn, Emily, Taylor and I have all been working on SOC (Student Orientation Committee) to ensure 2013’s Frosh Week is THEE BEST YET!

Gareth, Emily, Dasher and I took a tour of New Residence A & B today and they’re coming along nicely. You know that show room window they have in Bishops that everyone sees on their campus tour and dreams about …well maybe you didn’t dream about it, but I definitely did … there are two rooms like that in each residence! Think how unreal it would be to have one of those rooms! Speaking of New Residence, the Exec are happy to say that we have just recently sent out the applications for HOUSE PRESIDENT and VICE PRESIDENT of New Rez A & B!! There will be one President and one Vice President in each building! The link is attached down below!

Looking good!!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to contact me!

Hope you’re all having fantastic summers!

Summer so Far

WOW, So the past couples of weeks have flown by!!  We’re getting adjusted and settled into our jobs and positions now and have jumped right into planning for Orientation Week 2013!!! We’ve got some awesome new ideas for events and have been discussing which act to bring in for our main concert.

Last week the executive team traveled to Halifax to attend sessions put on by Students NS. It was a great chance to meet executives from other Nova Scotia universities. The three-day conference played host to many discussions on topics important to our campus, such as Mental Health initiatives, tools for lobbying the government and a break down of how Students NS works.

Discussing Student Politics with other executive teams!

After the conference was complete, Ben and Amy went on to Ottawa to attend CASA (Canadian Alliance of Student Associations) for more meetings and discussions. When they return you’ll get the low down from one of them about the conference!

It’s been a great few weeks in the office and I’m looking forward to see what the rest of the summer has in store.  I have been working with Kennedy Murphy (the summer Station Manager for CFXU) to create a music blog which reviews all sorts of albums and is a great resource for anyone in search of new music.
Be sure to check it out: www.cfxuandu.tumblr.com

If you’re interested in learning more about Students NS check out their website here, or feel free to ask one of us about it!

Cheers,

Emily

Incoming VP Profile: Amy Brierly, VP Union Services

Hey There Everyone! J

My name is Amy Brierley and I am your VP Union Services for the 2013-2014 year! I am currently in my fourth year of the Bachelor of Arts program here at X, working towards an Honours in Development Studies and a Subsidiary in Political Science. I transferred to St. FX after my first year and am a proud Bear, having spent my first year living in the Mount. I was born in a town just outside of Manchester, England (for those who follow British football, I’ve been a proud Manchester City fan since I was born) and immigrated to Canada when I was three. I have lived in small town Acton, Ontario ever since.

This will be my third year being involved with the U. In my first year I was an environmental rep on the Mount’s House Council and a Research Officer. In second year, I held the positions of Student Food Resource Centre Coordinator and External Equity Advocate.
My job this year consists of managing and overseeing the services provided by the Students’ Union. This includes the Student Food Resource Centre, Student Advocates, X-Tutoring and Off Campus Housing. I am also involved with the Campus Trust Health and Dental Plan. There have been some really exciting changes to my office this year, allowing me to be more involved with health and well-being issues on campus, including sexual assault awareness, mental health awareness and physical health! I’m pretty passionate about all of these issues and can’t wait to pursue some awesome initiatives this year! If you are ever wondering how you can get involved on campus, drop by my office and I can help you find something that speaks to your own passion! I will also be your secondary delegate for CASA and Students Nova Scotia. If you are ever interested in chatting about our lobbying efforts at the provincial or federal level, drop Ben or myself a line!

On a more personal note: I am actively involved with the Development Studies Society, Coady FX and the Model United Nations Society on campus. My favourite group is Two Door Cinema Club but I love mostly any type of music. I like chocolate too much for my own good, jump at any chance to sing karaoke and love road trips. I am also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I like meeting new people, and would love to chat if you ever want to drop by my office!

Here’s to a great year!

Incoming VP Profile: Taylor Mason, Vice President

Hey all,

My name is Taylor Mason and I am the Students' Union Vice President for the 2013-2014 year! When people ask me where I am from, I usually say PEI, but I could also say Nova Scotia or Saskatchewan so whatever you prefer works fine for me. I am currently in my fourth year double majoring in Aquatic Resources and Public Policy/Social Research, which I absolutely love.

The U and I are quite familiar as I began my years at X as Frosh Councillor and environmental rep on house council, moving on to TNT House President in my 2nd year. I studied abroad in my 3rd year and spent an unforgettable 6 months in New Zealand which was nothing short of an amazing experience.

In my role as VP, most of my responsibilities fall under equity and academics. I advocate for various equity issues and support equity seeking groups throughout the StFX community while also sitting as a student representative on the University's Senate. I sit on a number of committees that focus on student orientation, equity on campus, and our academic lives, while consistently working to get your voices heard!

There is such a variety of paths offered to students to find their passion and get involved within the StFX community, and I truly encourage every one of you to seek these opportunities out! We are all here for the same bumpin and memorable moments, however time flies so let's take advantage of every open door here at X (too many to count) and work together to make the most of our Xperience!
If you have any questions, concerns or ideas don't ever hesitate to contact me or any of the Executive team! Or, if you would rather chat about things such as X-Men, music festivals, NBA, Game of Thrones, etc then just come on by.

Peace n Blessings,

Taylor Mason

Incoming VP Profile: Kelly Nelson, VP Student Relations

Hey X!

My name is Kelly Nelson and I’m really excited to be your VP Student Relations for 2013-2014!
Three years ago, I came to X from the small town of Tyrone, Ontario and have been bleeding blue and white ever since! I am currently in my fourth year of a BSc in Mathematics and love hearing people tell me I’m crazy because of it. Before being on TheU, I was a frosh in MacIsaac, RA in Lane Hall, and the HD of MacKinnon Hall (Chillis & MacNeil). Clearly I love living in residence, but this year you’ll find me reppin’ the green and yellow of Off Campus! When I’m not cracking down on the books, you can find me out volunteering, running around campus or at the KMC playing hockey, and if I’m not there then I’ve probably tripped or ran into an inanimate object and I’ll be there soon!

To give you all a run through of what the VP Student Relations does: I am the primary liaison between the Students’ Union and Residence Services, I manage the House Council Coordinators, House Presidents/Vice Presidents and Off Campus Leaders, and I sit on several committees including Student Orientation Committee, Food Service Liaison Committee and Campus Affairs Committee. This may sound like a lot of work, but to be honest it’s Friday and I cannot wait for Monday!

I am so excited to be part of your Students’ Union Executive for the coming term! We have so much in store and can’t wait to share it with you! Make sure to catch up on sleep over the summer because you’re going to need it! I cannot wait to meet all of you – whether it’s walking to class or out at Wing Night, feel free to stop me to say hi or send some of your wonderful ideas my way! For the upcoming year, I really want to stress the fact that the Students’ Union is “By Students. For Students” and we are here to ensure that you have the best year yet!!

120 DAYS TIL FROSH WEEK!
